About the event
The second in our four-part four-year lecture series will focus on the culinary traditions that rose from the legacy of slavery with Keynote Speaker Dr. Jessica Harris. Many of the celebrated traditions associated with the Southern American experience found their roots during the Antebellum era. The foundation of what we now call Southern Gourmet is attributed to the black cooks who turned plantation food preparation into culinary creativity.Â
A panel of distinguished guests will explore the many contributions of African American culture and heritage. The panelists will respond to segments from the documentary "High on the Hog" and lecture participants will join in a "recipe swap." At the end of the lecture, Chef Shac will offer cultural food tastings to complete the event.
Dr. Jessica Harris is a culinary historian and author of "High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey From Africa to America, the basis for the acclaimed Netflix series of the same name.
As one of the ranking authorities on the food of the African Diaspora, Dr. Harris consults internationally and holds numerous degrees, awards, and accolades.
