About the event
The John G. Riley Center and Museum invites the community to join us for the exhibit opening of African Americans in Tallahassee: The World Wars and Post-War Life, an evening celebrating the debut of our newest exhibition.
The exhibit traces the experiences of African Americans in Tallahassee from World War I through World War II and into the post-war era, examining how global conflict shaped life at home and abroad. Beginning with World War I, the exhibition highlights military service, shifting opportunities, and the barriers African Americans continued to face. It then explores the interwar years, including the Great Depression, and the profound impact economic hardship had on Black families and communities.
As the story moves into World War II, the exhibit focuses on the experiences of African Americans in the armed forces, the growth of social life and entertainment, and the ways local residents joined the workforce to support…
