As a part of the Riley Museum’s “America’s 250: Chasing Our Civic Roots” series, Dr. Tameka Bradley will deliver a presentation entitled “Towards a More Perfect Union: Exploring America’s Civic Timeline.” On the heels of the Juneteenth National Independence Day and the approach of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America on July 4th, Dr. Bradley will explore the nation’s complicated journey toward defining citizenship in the aftermath of the US Civil War as it worked to incorporate 4 million recently emancipated people into the body politic after 1865. The nation struggled for a century to fully and finally extend and protect the right to vote for all citizens, culminating in the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
