African Americans in Tallahassee:

The Civil War and Reconstruction Era

Explore the powerful legacy of African Americans in Tallahassee during the Civil War and Reconstruction era at the John G. Riley Center & Museum. This immersive exhibit features rare artifacts, compelling oral histories, and a striking mural of the Battle of Natural Bridge, with Black Union soldiers modeled after members of the 2nd Infantry USCT Living History Association. Discover the vital role Black soldiers played in the fight for freedom, the origins of Tallahassee’s oldest Black neighborhoods, and the emergence of a resilient Black professional class.
